What this paper is about
This paper provides students with the opportunity to explore what it means to be a professional scientist, understand the approach to scientific inquiry, find and engage with a workplace of science practice, explore the practice of science in the workplace, identify a science problem to solve, and propose a plan to solve this science problem with relevant ethical considerations. A component of this paper occurs while the student is in the workplace.
As this paper serves to prepare students for their research component in the workplace, this paper will be undertaken at the beginning of the MSc(Tech) studies. This paper will guide the student through the required preparation for the workplace, facilitates the students engagement with a workplace, and the development of a research proposal while in the workplace. This paper also includes the transition and familiarizing stages of the student being in the workplace.
How this paper will be taught
Students commence their graduate placement at different times and some students will be completing their graduate placement part-time, therefore, the paper is coded as a X Semester to allow for flexibility in start and end dates for facilitating the work placement. However, common practice will be that SCIEN570 will occur over the A Semester while students are undertaking other A Semester papers.
The paper is self-paced and there are no lectures or workshops associated with this paper, however, there will be face-to-face contact with the paper convener. Assignment due dates are negotiated separately for each student, depending on when the engagement with the workplace commences.
This paper does not have scheduled contact times. All teaching contact is through one-to-one (or small groups) interactions with the teaching staff. If the workplace is overseas, this contact will be through email and video connection.
There are six assignments with due dates individually negotiated depending on the starting time of the student.
Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:
Assessments
How you will be assessed
Assessment of student learning is based on the completion of five assessment items. This paper is wholly internally assessed. The 'Health & Safety assignment' is compulsory - failure to submit this assignment will result in an IC grade for the paper. Additional details of the assignments will be provided on Moodle.
Assessment due dates are determined through discussion with the Paper Convenor, and depends on when the student commences their workplace component of the thesis.
The internal assessment/exam ratio (as stated in the University Calendar) is 100:0. There is no final exam.
